Water Quality and Your Health: Part 2

Water Quality and Your Health.jpg

Now that you have an idea of the effects of Chromium-6, let’s discuss another chemical many people are unaware of — chlorine. Yes, good old chlorine. Most of us know swimming pools are chlorinated and some of us are aware tap water is chlorinated as well. No big deal, right?

Wrong! It is a big deal.

Do you remember eighth grade science class, when you learned about your body’s organs? Well, if you don’t remember, skin is the largest organ. And when you swim in the pool for half a day, have you experienced fatigue? The reason is, that your body has ingested chlorine from the pool.

Now, let’s discuss the health effects of chlorine, cancer and heart disease. According to research by the Medical College of Wisconsin, "We are quite convinced, based on our study, that there is an association between cancer and chlorinated water."

So think about this. When chlorine is added to our water, it combines with other natural compounds to form trihalomethane. These chlorine byproducts trigger the production of free radicals in the body, causing cell damage that's highly carcinogenic. Scary, huh?

Chlorine also has the ability to affect your plumbing system by destroying any rubber products over time. In almost every faucet, toilet and shutoff valve, there are rubber products. This is perhaps one of the most common ways for leaks to develop.
