Many people have heard of Freon. If you haven’t, it’s the chemical in your air conditioner that makes it operate. Having the proper amount in your system is critical for the air conditioner to work properly.

Freon is a brand name and there are many different kinds. The two most common refrigerants are R-22 and R-410A. Almost all home air conditioners will use one of these.

If you have an older system, chances are that it uses R-22. This refrigerant was banned by the US government. They stopped making air conditioners that use R-22 about 10 years ago. Beginning in 2020 R-22 will no longer be made. So, if your system uses R-22, you may want to consider a replacement. The cost of the refrigerant has gone up considerably and will continue to go up. It will also become harder to find.

If you have a newer system, you probably have R-410A. This refrigerant is less expensive, better for the environment, and is the refrigerant that all manufacturers use in their new units.

We hope this blog helps you understand Freon a little better and assists you in making an educated decision when faced with an air conditioning repair.
