Ductless air conditioners, or ductless mini-split ACs, are very popular due to their many unique qualities. When a traditional HVAC system isn’t an option, a ductless AC might be the perfect choice.

We’ve compiled everything you need to figure out if a ductless AC is right for you.

What is it?

A ductless air conditioner heats and cools just like other HVAC systems – but there is no need to install ductwork.

While a traditional AC unit has a central unit that delivers cooled or heated air to the house through ducts, a ductless AC consists of (at minimum) an indoor and outdoor unit connected by refrigerant tubing and electric wiring. The refrigerant removes heat and humidity from the air inside as it runs through the indoor unit and releases that heat when running through the outdoor unit.

There are two types of ductless mini-split ACs: single-zone and multi-zone. A single-zone ductless AC has one outdoor compressor that corresponds to one indoor unit. A multi-zone AC has a single outdoor compressor with up to five indoor units.

Multi-zone systems can cool an entire home, while single-zone systems are meant to cool one room.

Why use a ductless AC?

The qualities that make a ductless AC so popular are its efficiency and versatility. They work as well as traditional HVAC systems without the complexity of ducts, and they offer the perfect solution for many AC issues.

Older homes with no ductwork, added rooms, and converted basements or garages are not compatible with traditional HVAC systems. Installing a ductless AC system in these cases is the perfect solution to provide efficient heating and cooling. A ductless AC can even be used to supplement the traditional AC in a room that is always too hot or cold.

Additionally, a mini-split AC is quicker and easier to install, as it only requires a hole in the wall for wiring and tubing. This is much less intrusive and allows even a multi-zone system to be installed without difficulty.
