Have you ever flushed your toilet and it kept going and going…and going? Well, it sounds like you have a running toilet on your hands.
Besides the annoying sound it makes, running water in your toilet can quickly jack up your water bill. There are a number of reasons why a running toilet is a sign of toilet issues. Here are a few things that could be causing it.
Flush Valve
The flush valve, or flapper, is responsible for allowing clean water to rush into the toilet bowl. Flushing over time can cause wear and tear, which can lead to cracks and leaks.
If there is nothing to block the water from seeping into the bowl, the water will keep running. In this case, all you have to do is replace the valve.
Float Ball
The float ball is a ball that floats in the tank of your toilet and helps tell the valve to stop dispensing water whenever you flush. If you take the top off of the tank and see the ball not floating, you have found your problem.
Normally the issue can be as simple as the ball being in the wrong place and rubbing against the wall. Take the ball, and pull it away from the wall in the right spot.
Something else that could be happening is that there is a crack allowing the ball to intake water and not float. At this point, you would have to replace the ball.
Toilet Valve Chain
This part of the toilet helps pull the flush valve up to let the water out of the tank and into the bowl. If it is the wrong size, it can cause your valve to close incorrectly or not at all.
When the chain is too long, it could either not lift the valve or get stuck under it as it tries to close. If it is too short, it will never close. This problem is easy to fix by switching out the chain for the correct length.
