Central vs. Ductless Air Conditioning

March 10, 2021 | Blog

When it comes to air conditioning in your home, the thing that seems to matter the most is how good the unit is in actually providing the kind of air that they want. Today, there are so many different kinds of cooling and heating systems to equip your home with.

Depending on your wants and needs, one unit could be more beneficial to you than the other. If you’re considering replacing your AC system or simply just ready to get a new one, you may be wondering what the differences are when it comes to a central unit or a ductless air unit.

Central Air Conditioning: Pros and Cons

A central air unit, also known as the central air conditioner, is what cools or heats your entire house as one. Most homes are equipped with a central air unit, however, older homes may not have them built-in, in which case, you will have to have  It comes with an outdoor compressor and a condenser coil that is connected to an indoor furnace which is fitted with an evaporator coil. It is also equipped with refrigeration lines that connect the inside and outside equipment. You can program your system to come on once the inside of your home has reached a certain temperature. This allows the regulation of your desired temperature in your home.

Pros to having a central air unit:

  • Reduces humidity levels
  • Cleaner air
  • Quieter operation
  • Effective circulation
  • Less space is taken up
  • Multiple functions

Cons to having a central air unit:

  • Limited liability
  • Hot or cold spots in your house
  • Can potentially cause minor health problems
  • Higher energy bills
  • Duct maintenance

Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioning

A ductless air unit, also known as a ductless mini-split system, is a lot like a central air unit, but also has many differences. Simply put, they both provide air to your home. Both consist of two units, an air handler on the inside of your home and a condenser on the outside of your home. A ductless air unit is a smaller indoor unit that is actually in the room with you.

Similar to a window unit, a mini-split, or ductless system eliminates the need for air ducts in your house. By pulling in the warm air from the room it’s sitting in, the ductless air system then reproduces it into cold air and then sends it back into the room. Ductless units only condition the air in one room at a time and only in the rooms where there is a unit.

Pros to having a ductless air unit:

  • No need for ductwork or duct maintenance
  • Fast installation
  • Saves space
  • Zoned units
  • Minor maintenance

Cons to having a ductless air unit:

  • Higher up-front cost
  • Appearance
  • Limited heating options
  • Installation costs are higher
  • Louder unit

Both types of HVAC units have their pros and cons, so it is ultimately up to you to decide what you think is best for your home. If you want the same temperature throughout your whole home, a central air unit will most likely be more beneficial to you. If you have a room that tends to get colder or warmer than the other rooms, then a ductless mini-split system may be your best bet.
